Reflection
The way the BC curriculum is designed as a set of Big Ideas and Learning Standards for each grade and curriculum area, underpinned by the three Core Competencies – Communication, Thinking, Personal and Social – reflects a recent shift in our understanding of education in BC. It represents a shift away from thinking about education as simply filling students’ heads with factual knowledge of disconnected subjects to viewing the curriculum content as a means for helping students develop the skills and attitudes of lifelong learners. This is significant because it encourages students to make connections between their learning and their everyday lives which creates meaningful and memorable learning experiences.
