Hello!
My name is Faith, and I am a first-year Teacher Candidate in the Bachelor of Education Program at Thompson Rivers University. I was born and raised on the traditional and unceded lands of Tk’emlups te Secwepemc in beautiful British Columbia and am incredibly grateful to call Kamloops home. Before beginning the Bachelor of Education Program, I also attended Thompson Rivers University where I earned a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in April 2024 with a Major in English. While completing my degree, I also worked as the Children’s Ministry Coordinator at Kamloops Alliance Church for just over three years. This experience gave me the opportunity to use and grow my passion for teaching and working with children and families through serving my local church community. In 2024 and 2025, I also had the opportunity to work in School District No. 73 in the After School Sports and Arts Initiative (ASSAI) program as a Person of Rapport for two after school art programs in a local elementary school.
Outside of school and work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing board games, doing puzzles, watching movies, baking, crafting, and doing ballet. Another passion of mine is travel. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to visit ten different countries and nine Canadian provinces so far. My favourite part about travelling to new places is learning about the rich history of that place and seeing how people of different cultures live.
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a teacher. In Grades 11 and 12 I had the opportunity to do a Capstone Project that involved spending 1-2 hours a week in a Kindergarten classroom that was part of a pilot project for a partially outdoor education program. The project culminated in writing a report on outdoor Kindergarten and presenting the report to a panel of educators.
While earning my degree I had the opportunity to look at my own educational experiences and the Canadian education system through a new, critical lens. One of my favourite quotes about education is from the late Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair who said, “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.” I am keenly aware of the ways that education in Canada has been used as a tool of violence and oppression and how I as a white, descendent of settlers hold privilege and power within this system. As a future teacher, it is my mission in every classroom I enter to make each child feel that they are loved and that they matter, and I am committed to life-long learning and working to decolonize education.
