Reflection

To me, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, particularly those regarding education, speak to the resiliency of Indigenous people in Canada. For several decades the Canadian government had a paternalistic approach to the education of Indigenous children, believing that Indigenous communities were unable to adequately educate their children. This paternalistic attitude, while no longer explicitly stated, continues to characterize the relationship between the government of Canada and the education of Indigenous children, especially those children being educated on reserves. The TRC Calls to Action pertaining to education are significant because they draw attention to this implicit bias that continues to disadvantage and harm Indigenous students today.
